Biography

Maria Grazia Carriero was born in Gioia del Colle (BA) in 1980. Artist and teacher of drawing, painting and scenography ,  she graduated in Visual and Performing Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

Unceasing traveller – with a fundamental experience in Marrakech – and experimenter, she ranges  from painting to photography, video art and installations.

The common denominator in her research is virtuality , a philosophical and anthropological concept investigated through the analysis of popular culture, ascetic beliefs and practices.

Protagonist of numerous solo and group exhibitions, she boasts important participations in artist video reviews at the Fabbrica del Vapore (DOCVA) in Milan and Merz Foundation in Turin. On the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, she exhibited at the Rathaus in Stuttgart.

In 2015 , she took part in “Mediterranea 17 – Young Artist Biennale. No Food No Land” curated by Bjcem and Andrea Bruciati, at the Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan again.

In 2016 , she is involved in the exhibition “Another me” organized by Angelo Raffele Villani at the MARTA in Taranto.

Finalist in the Zingarelli Rocca delle Macìe Award in 2012, she is awarded with an artist residency within the “Open doors to art project. Contemporary art in the places of daily life,” curated by Lorenzo Madaro, Maria Rosaria Goffredo and Manuela Goffredo (Palagiano, TA).

So far she has exhibited in prestigious public and private institutions, from the Pall Mall gallery in London to the Kantieri Teatrali Koreja in Lecce and the Pino Pascali Foundation in Polignano a Mare.

In 2018, she wrote a first paper: “Art and ethnographic research. Il laùru: places, meetings, testimonies with the Progedit Editore as part of the series “Anthropology and Mediterranean”, directed by Eugenio Imbriani.

In the same year, she presented her solo exhibition “Waiting “curated by Nicola Zito, sponsored by Matera Capital of Culture 2019 and included in the calendar of the European Year of Cultural Heritage. In 2019, she presented her recent research “Hunting Evil” at the Spazio Microba in Bari.

Finalist with Special Mention “Project Award” at the international contemporary art competition Air Land 3.0 INSIDE LAND organized by the Quasi Quadro association of Turin. The photo of the work becomes part of the art collection of the Ex Officine Ferroviarie Museum in Barge (CN).

In 2021, she wrote a second paper with Nicola Zito: “Masquerade. The universe behind the mask. Paths between art and anthropology. Series of book Anthropology and Mediterranean.

In the same year she was a finalist and exhibited at the Biennial of Female Photography in Mantua “circuit Off” with project “Liminal” and Exhibart Prize.

Maria Grazia Carriero (Gioia del Colle, BA, 1980), artista e docente di discipline grafiche e scenografiche, si forma in Arti visive e discipline per lo spettacolo, indirizzo pittura, presso l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. Instancabile viaggiatrice – con una fondamentale esperienza a Marrakech – e sperimentatrice, passa dalla pittura alla fotografia, alla videoarte e alle installazioni; comune denominatore della sua ricerca è la virtualità, concetto filosofico e antropologico indagato attraverso l’analisi della cultura popolare, delle credenze e delle pratiche ascetiche. Protagonista di numerose mostre personali e collettive, vanta importanti partecipazioni a rassegne di video d’artista- Video.it – alla Fabbrica del Vapore (DOCVA) di Milano e alla Fondazione Merz di Torino. Nel 150° anniversario dell’Unità d’Italia espone al Rathaus di Stoccarda, mentre nel 2015 partecipa a Mediterranea 17 – Young Artist Biennale. No Food No Land, curata da Bjcem e Andrea Bruciati, sempre alla Fabbrica del Vapore di Milano, e nel 2016 viene coinvolta nella mostra Another me, organizzata da Angelo Raffele Villani al MARTA di Taranto. Finalista nel 2012 del Premio Zingarelli Rocca delle Macìe, nel 2014 è vincitrice di una residenza d’artista nell’ambito del progetto Open doors to art. L’arte contemporanea nei luoghi del quotidiano, a cura di Lorenzo Madaro, Maria Rosaria Goffredo e Manuela Goffredo (Palagiano, TA). Ha esposto in prestigiose istituzioni pubbliche e private, dalla Galleria Pall Mall di Londra ai Kantieri Teatrali Koreja di Lecce e alla Fondazione Pino Pascali di Polignano a Mare.

Nel 2018 pubblica con Progedit Editore il suo primo libro: Arte e ricerca etnografica. Il laùru: i luoghi, gli incontri, le testimonianze; entrando nella collana editoriale Antropologia e Mediterraneo diretta dal prof. Eugenio Imbriani. Sempre nello stesso anno, presenta la sua personale Waiting a cura di Nicola Zito, patrocinata da Matera Capitale della cultura 2019 ed inserita nel calendario dell’anno europeo del patrimonio culturale.  Nel 2019 espone presso la galleria Microba di Bari in una personale dal titolo Hunting Evil, a cura di Nicola Zito.

Nel 2020 il video Parole a Sud è selezionato per la piattaforma Futuro Arcaico (osservatorio Artistico Digitale) a cura di Folklore Elettrico.

Sempre nello stesso anno presenta in anteprima nazionale il suo docufilm Ritratto, in un evento a cura dell’associazione culturale Luce E Sale, patrocinato da Apulia Film Commissione, Regione Puglia, Luce & Sale, Consulta delle Associazioni di Palagiano.

È finalista con Menzione Speciale “Premio Progetto” al concorso internazionale d’Arte contemporanea Air Land 3.0 INSIDE LAND indetta dall’associazione Quasi Quadro di Torino. La foto dell’opera entra a far parte della collezione d’arte del Museo Ex officine Ferroviarie di Barge (CN).  Sempre nel 2020, è tra i dieci finalisti del   Mellone Art Prize, I edizione War Drama, indetto dall’omonima Fondazione.

Nel 2021 pubblica insieme a Nicola Zito il saggio Masquerade. L’Universo dietro la maschera. Percorsi tra arte e Antropologia. Collana Antropologia e mediterraneo diretta dal prof. Eugenio Imbriani,  Progedit editore. Sempre nello stesso anno è tra le 8 finaliste dell’ Open Call Biennale della Fotografia Femminile di Mantova circuito Off con il progetto Liminal e all’ Exhibart Prize.
